Tenth International Symposium on Capture Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy and Related Topics

Santa Fe, New Mexico - USA
August 30-September 3,1999

First Announcement

1. SCOPE AND SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

The Tenth International Symposium on Capture Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy and Related Topics will be organized by the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and will be held at the Eldorado Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This Symposium is tenth in the series of meetings held previously at Studsvik, Sweden (1969); Petten, The Netherlands (1974); Brookhaven, USA (1978); Grenoble, France (1981); Knoxville, USA (1984); Leuven, Belgium (1987); Asilomar, USA (1990); Fribourg, Switzerland (1993); and Budapest, Hungary (1996).
The Symposium will continue the general themes of earlier conferences, with special emphasis on gamma-ray spectroscopy, nuclear structure, nuclear reactions, nuclear data and applications related to capture reactions. Topics to be discussed during the symposium will include, but are not limited to:
- nuclear structure (theory, capture and complementary experiments)
- capture reactions (mechanism, resonances, strength functions)
- statistical nuclear properties (level densities, fluctuations, chaos)
- nuclear astrophysics (s-, r-, p-process nuclide production)
- fundamental physics (symmetries, properties of the neutron)
- practical applications (physics, chemistry, materials science, medicine)
- new techniques and facilities (instruments, cold neutrons, neutron sources)

2. CONTRIBUTIONS

The program will include invited and contributed papers. Nominations for invited talks and details for submissions of contributed papers will be provided in the official call for nominations and contributed papers in November. A draft abstract will be required for all submissions at that time. Some number of contributed talks will be selected for oral presentation. All other contributions accepted by the Program Committee (see Web site address below) will be presented in the poster sessions. All posters will remain on display during the Symposium. The proceedings of the Symposium will be published. The conference language will be English.

Industry is welcomed to participate in technical presentations and in exhibits.

3. CONFERENCE LOCATION

The Symposium venue will be the Eldorado Hotel, near the Santa Fe Plaza. Santa Fe is the oldest capital city in the U.S. and the oldest European community west of the Mississippi River. The city is at an elevation of 7000 feet above sea level, bordered on the West by the volcanic Jemez mountains and on the East by the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) range of the Rocky Mountains. Santa Fe is bound to have a little something for everyone. The city not only offers a historic past and rich culture to peruse but is known for its many shops and boutiques, art galleries, and wide range of entertainment from dance to theater to music. Much of what Santa Fe has to offer is located within the historic downtown area that can easily be traversed on foot.

With 300+ days of sunshine a year and an average relative humidity of 50 percent, our warm months are filled with what many call a "dry heat ," which is far less draining and more tolerable than a hot day filled with humidity. Warm days and cool evenings are the rule for summer and fall. The city and surrounding area offer a mixture of colors, geologies, textures, and scenery that have kept artists and visitors alike coming back for decades.

Santa Fe is located in northern New Mexico, an hour's drive north of Albuquerque, the state's major city and air gateway. Albuquerque International Airport is serviced by most major U.S. airlines. Shuttle service is available from the Albuquerque airport and rental cars are also
available.
