Dear Colleague, enclosed please find the first announcement of the International Nuclear Physics Conference: "Bologna 2000 - Structure of the Nucleus at the Dawn of the Century" organized by the Physics Department of the University of Bologna and the Bologna Section of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics. Since our initial mailing list is certainly incomplete, we would appreciate it very much, if you could forward the announcement to anyone who may be interested. Those wishing to attend or receive the second announcement are requested to complete the questionnaire at our web site: http://nucth2000.bo.infn.it or fill out the pre-registration form below and e-mail to: nucth2000@bo.infn.it for the Organizing Committee, Prof. Giovanni C. Bonsignori Physics Department University of Bologna Via Irnerio 46 40126 Bologna, ITALIA __________________________________________________________________________ BOLOGNA - CULTURAL CAPITAL OF EUROPE IN 2000 The Physics Department of the University of Bologna and the Bologna Section of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) will organize an International Nuclear Physics Conference: "Bologna 2000 - Structure of the Nucleus at the Dawn of the Century" May 29 - June 3, 2000. Bologna, ITALIA The idea of the Conference emerges from a desire to discuss perspectives in fundamental Nuclear Physics. Some of the most important European research facilities are located in Italy, a country with a long and rich tradition in this field. The initiative is rendered timely by the fact that in the year 2000 Bologna will be cultural Capital of Europe. In 1997, when Thessaloniki was the cultural Capital, the Aristotle University organized a very successful conference: "Advances in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas". It is hoped that the proposed event would establish a tradition of Nuclear Physics meetings. The Conference is organized by the Physics Department of the University of Bologna and INFN Bologna Section. It is sponsored, among others, by the Italian Physical Society, the INFN National Laboratory in Legnaro (LNL), the INFN National Laboratory in Catania (LNS), the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas in Trento. The scope of the Conference is to present a review of recent advances in the field of Nuclear Physics, and to provide a forum for the discussion of current and future research projects. The program of the Conference includes the main activities and trends in selected topics of Nuclear Structure, Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions, Hadron Dynamics and Nuclear Astrophysics. The Conference will discuss advances and perspectives in basic research, and it is expected to attract the interest of the most active researchers all over the world. Additional topics related to trans-disciplinary use and peaceful applications of nuclear science have been included in the program. The proposed event is an international Conference devoted to a discipline which has seen a strong revival of research activities in the last decade. New experimental results and theoretical developments in the field of Nuclear Physics will certainly produce important contributions to our knowledge and understanding of Nature's fundamental building blocks. It is the aim of the Conference to promote the exchange of ideas and future collaboration among nuclear scientists in Europe, their colleagues in the more developed countries in America and Asia, and scientists from developing regions. The goal of the Conference is also to provide critical guidelines for our studies of atomic nuclei, their constituents, synthesis, structure and reactions, in the next century.
