A synthetic model has been used to describe the interaction of slow neutrons with H2 and D2 molecules. The model yields analytic expressions for the double-differential scattering cross section, the P0 and P1 energy-transfer kernels and the total cross section. From these, neutron scattering and transport properties in liquid H2 and D2 are calculated and compared with available experimental results, showing very good agreement. These evaluations are relevant for cold neutron source design.
